Email remains a vital communication channel for businesses seeking to connect with their customers. Companies utilize email for marketing, transactional communications, and keeping clients informed about product updates and events. To fully leverage this powerful communication tool, businesses need effective strategies to monitor and enhance their email delivery rates, ensuring that every message reaches its intended recipient.
Amazon Simple Email Service (Amazon SES) offers a cost-effective, flexible, and scalable solution for sending emails directly from applications. The introduction of the new Virtual Deliverability Manager (VDM) equips customers with tools to refine their email sending strategies, thereby boosting delivery success rates and optimizing campaign returns. VDM comprises three key components: deliverability insights, optimization suggestions, and automatic adjustments.
The VDM dashboard provides users with comprehensive insights into vital metrics such as bounce rates, complaints, open rates, click-through rates, and successful deliveries. Users can assess these metrics at various levels, including by sending email address, email provider, or SES configuration set, allowing for quick monitoring of sending health trends.
Additionally, VDM evaluates sending configurations and offers automatic recommendations to enhance delivery success. For instance, it may suggest adjustments like DKIM (DomainKeys Identified Mail) configuration to improve the likelihood of successful email delivery.
Moreover, VDM can dynamically modify email sending in real time to minimize the chances of emails being marked as spam. This feature acts as a safeguard against sudden changes in spam management by email providers, significantly reducing the impact of abrupt increases in rejection rates.
Getting started with SES VDM is straightforward. Simply log into the AWS Console and access the configuration section of the SES Console. Click on “Configuration” and select “Get started with Virtual Deliverability Manager.”
You will be guided through several configuration options when activating VDM. First, you can choose to track whether HTML emails sent through SES are opened or if recipients click on links within those emails. Engagement metrics, including open and click rates, can be viewed grouped by account, mailbox provider (e.g., Gmail), sending email address, and configuration set level. SES tracks open rates using an image pixel embedded in the HTML message, sending a notification to SES when the image is downloaded by email clients. Clicks are tracked by wrapping hyperlinks in a link managed by SES, allowing for accurate click counting.
You can also opt for VDM to select the most appropriate IP addresses for sending your emails dynamically. This ensures that, when using shared IP addresses, your outbound emails are sent through the highest reputation addresses available in SES, increasing the chances of successful delivery to your customers’ inboxes. For dedicated IP addresses, VDM ensures that outbound traffic utilizing shared addresses during the warm-up period for dedicated IPs employs the highest reputation addresses, reducing the likelihood of being marked as spam.
Follow the prompts on the next screen to enable VDM, and rest assured that you can adjust your configuration options at any time. Virtual Deliverability Manager is accessible in all SES-supported regions. For further information, you can visit the Amazon SES documentation.
